I’m not promising anything this time…

…. because I know I’m not going to keep that promise.

I enjoy blogging — I really do. I even kept up for a while sometime … last year? The year before? Who’s counting, anyway?

At any rate, I figured I’d just post something here to make myself feel ok about having a blog.

Does it make me feel a whole lot better? Not really. Just a little.

See you next time.

Time is on my side…

Or should I say, time is in my hand?

I had the privilege to serve as time-keeper for this evening’s Congressional debate at the Blaisdell, <shameless plug> sponsored by OHA, and brought to you by Hawaii News Now </shameless plug>.

Three veteran politicians fielded questions from panelists and people who posed questions via the internet.

While I didn’t have the opportunity to really listen to each candidate’s answers, I would definitely label the debate “spirited.” Cliche, yes, I know. Of special note, jabs between Ed Case and Charles Djou. That HAD to be awkward standing next to each other for an hour-and-a-half.

I had a trusty stopwatch to help time each candidate’s response. To my surprise, they all kept their answers pretty short. There were a few instances of a few extra seconds here and there, but nothing to really complain about.

My partner in time, Sheryl, had the responsibility of triggering the green, yellow, and red lights at the front of the stage.  These served as a visual cue for when each candidate should begin (green), begin to wrap up (yellow), and stop (red). Of course, we were always on our toes and the entire show ran smoothly.

Even though this task sounds mundane, I actually had a lot of fun. I would definitely do it again, should they need me.

Bottom line — if you watched, I hope we helped you make a more informed decision when you receive your special ballot. Every vote counts!

Rendering…

It always seems to take so long.

But hey — it allows me to multi-task. Sort of. Okay, I admit it. My blog has nothing to do with my job. But, I figured I’d kill two birds with one render.

I just read over at FirstShowing.net that Joss Whedon is in final negotiations with Marvel to direct the Avengers movie. I admittedly don’t know much of Whedon’s work, but Kalena enjoys what he does. I think our friend Cat once said that he has the Midas touch. At any rate, I’ve heard enough people rave about his work, so here’s hoping that he does a good job!

On another note, I’ve been thinking of coming up with a regular update schedule for my blog. That way, it’ll help keep me on track, and hopefully help me come up with better topics. Maybe I’ll even post a pic or two along the way. Of course, if something tickles my fancy, I’ll randomly update here and there between scheduled postings. I’ve been thinking of maybe a Monday / Thursday update. Is that something that would interest you? I think maybe only like 3 people read my blog (including myself, for editing purposes). Maybe I’ll organize it a little better and keep the regularly scheduled posts on a separate page.

Hehe. I don’ t know. I don’t get paid to do this, so the whole thing might just go out the window.

We’ll see.

Power outages…

I hate them. But oh well, what can you do? Times like these, I’m thankful that I own this Droid. Because now, I have no electricity, but I can still blog.

Also wanted to mention that Kalena took home three awards tonight. Two awards of excellence, and one merit award. No Pele, but that’s okay. Her classmate Quintin took home the Pele for the student advertising category with his Bob Marley CD packaging. Congratulations all around!

I’m stopping here, because it’s a little difficult to blog with this thing. Good night, all!

Score!

While wandering through Wal-Mart, I found that they were selling “Mirror’s Edge” for the Xbox 360 for only fifteen bucks!

That was a definite score! I’ve been wanting to get the game since it came out. However, I didn’t think it was sixty bucks good. I even passed it up when Best Buy had it for $29.99. But hey, fifteen bucks? Yes, please!

Also picked up Battlefield Bad Company 2, because it was on sale at Best Buy. It’s pretty good so far. I still think Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 feels a whole lot better, but I have to play the game more to really find out.

Other than that, movie night tomorrow. It’s Kalena’s pick. We’ve all been kind of harassing her (in fun) to pick TRON, but I believe she said some Muppet Movie was in order.

Thank goodness it’s not Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring — the director’s cut, because I would just enforce an early bedtime for myself.

Darn you, Bejeweled Blitz…

I’ve been playing Bejeweled Blitz for almost an hour. Why? I don’t know. It’s more frustrating than fun.

Eric and Joel will tell you, that game is a frickin’ waste of time and energy, and they’re right.

However, when I see people posting scores over 500,000 it makes me wonder how the hell they do it. I know I’m not that good, but I only scored 120,000 tops!

Well, I’m gonna go back to it. So much for blogging, huh?

Long weekend too short…

Ah yes. A three-day weekend. It’s the kind of thing you cherish if you’re a Monday – Friday kind of worker, which fortunately, I am.

Not too much going on this weekend, but I am sad that it’s pretty much gone now. Had a small, yet nice, birthday BBQ for Kaulana, and we still managed to fit in movie night. Went to see a friend’s band play at J.J. Dolan’s — they sounded great and hey, the pizza was pretty darned good, too! And wrap the weekend up with Shakedown rehearsal. Oh, hey, even got to mow the lawn.

I remember before my father passed away, I used to try and stay as far away from home on the weekends. I guess that’s because I knew that I would have to do stuff around the house if I just stayed home. The freedom to do what I want when I wanted wasn’t there. As one would expect, it’s very different now. Of course, if I had the choice, I’d much rather have my dad still be here and alive. I really miss him. I’m happy that our relationship really improved before he died, but I’m sad that it took that long. Anyhow, that’s another story for another blog.

I’m kind of a homebody now, though I love to see and hang out with my friends. I guess that’s why I’m kind of spoiled when it comes to movie night. Everyone comes here. I feel bad that Kenny has to drive all the way from Pearl City every weekend.

But yeah. This long weekend was too short, as they always are. That’s alright, because there’s always another one coming up.

Random Filler…

Here’s one of those posts that I consider random filler.

It’s pretty much a post for the sake of a post. You see, if I don’t do this sort of thing just to keep up, I’m pretty much just going to stop. It’s always been that way with personal projects.

I’ve really been wanting to get back into making short movies again. A friend of mine has been writing short scripts that we could possibly shoot.

I’m not going to say “Oh, I just don’t have time to do it.” That would be a lie. I do have the time, but I lack the motivation. Sure, I got the want to do it, but not the drive. I don’t know why. I love doing it!

It’s probably high time to kick myself in the butt and just do it. I mean, why not? I have a lot of friends who would be willing to help.

Anyone here willing to help out with some short movies over the next few months? I can’t pay, but I can probably buy you lunch!

Precious

With all the Oscar buzz this year, I made it a point to queue up Precious from Netflix.

I’m glad I did. I thought it was a great movie. I won’t give anything away here, since I’m not too keen on spoilers. If you want to find out what it was about, you can check it out on IMDB.

The film managed to make me laugh, but also made me feel very uncomfortable at times. It drives its point home very effectively, and you can’t help but feel terrible for the title character. Of course, she’s not the sparkling, can’t-do-wrong type who just can’t get a break. And, I think that’s a good thing!

I was so amazed with Gabourey Sidibe’s portrayal of Precious. I think she definitely deserved her Oscar nomination. I would almost say she should have won, but I’m not here to create arguments. I also don’t want to deal with anyone hating on Sandra Bullock. She’s awesome.

Mo’Nique as Precious’ mom just blew me away. Wow. I hated her character, which, to me, says a lot about her performance. I think she definitely deserved her Academy Award.

I even liked Mariah Carey’s turn as Mrs. Weiss. I think she managed to hold her own against some stellar performances.

Overall, I would encourage you to check it out. If strong themes like verbal and physical abuse really bother you, you may want to reconsider — the film plays very heavily on those elements.

To my fellow movie-clubbers, I give this movie five stars. Discussion to follow…

Don’t wake me up if I’m dreamin’…

Of course, if it’s a nightmare, please wake me up.

Last night, it wasn’t Kalena, Jonny, or even a nightmare that shook me from my peaceful slumber.

It was a hellishly painful, muscle twisting cramp in my left calf.

I tried frantically to grab my ankle and stretch it out. Nope. I stood up on one side of the bed and tried to stretch it out that way. No dice. All this time, I’m trying not to yell, because I didn’t want to wake Kenny and Kalena who had fallen asleep in the living room. For some reason, I thought I was going to die, which, obviously, would not have happened. I rolled over the bed and tried to stand up on the other end. My foot landed on the floor, and shot even more pain through my calf. I could no longer contain myself. I let out a yelp of pain, lost my balance and crashed hard on the floor beside the bed. As my leg continued to spasm, I remember hanging on to the corner of the bed and seeing light creep in from the space under the door. I was just about to call out for some help, when suddenly, my muscles stopped spasming, and everything relaxed. I decided to stay on the floor for a while. Thank goodness the pain had stopped. I also remember being thankful I didn’t wake anyone, because I thought that would have been uncool of me. Of course, when I told both Kenny and Kalena about the whole thing, they told me I should have yelled for help.

Hopefully, it won’t happen again, tonight.

On another note, the title of this post is a reference to the theme song from California Dreams (which I blogged about here). I finished watching seasons one and two over the weekend. The only problem is that I don’t think they’re ever going to release seasons three, four, and five. Perhaps it’s not a lucrative option for Shout Factory Video at this point, but one can hope. I also own seasons one and two of  Perfect Strangers. It’s been well over two years since its release, and a season three is nowhere to be found. Of course, Warner Home Video could ignore poor sales figures, and just give the fans what they want.

Hah! Don’t be ridiculous.
